How Spam Works
Why do people send spam?
Often, spam emails are sent for commercial purposes. Although some people consider it a bad thing, many companies still use spam. The cost of each email is very low and businesses can always send large amounts of money. Spam can also be a malicious attempt to gain access to your computer.

How to stop spam?
Spam messages can be difficult to stop, since botnets can send them. botnets are networks of infected computers. Therefore, the first spammer can be difficult to find and stop.
If you receive a message that appears to be spam (for example, if you don’t know the sender), mark the message as spam in your messaging app. Do not click on any links or attachments, including registering or unsubscribing. Spammers sometimes include these links to prove that your email address is valid, or the link may lead to a web page or download.
spam email dangerous?
Spam can be dangerous. It may contain malicious links that can infect your computer with malware (see What is malware?). Do not click on spam links. Dangerous spam tends to appear quickly, so you need to take action. Keep reading to learn more about some of the main types of spam. Common types of spam
Business statement
Whether an email is spam or legitimate advertising, in the United States it is subject to the guidelines of the CAN-SPAM Act.
When a company captures your email address, they often sign you up in their newsletter as a cheap way to sell their products. Each time you fill out an online form, look for a checkbox to enable or disable marketing emails. Although these emails can be annoying, most are harmless and must have an option to subscribe or unsubscribe. If you unsubscribe and continue to receive spam, update your email settings to filter messages from the sender’s address in your inbox.
Virus warning
Paradoxically, virus warnings are the most common form of spam. These websites alert you to computer viruses and provide solutions – usually virus scans – to address suspected cyber threats. But hesitating to click on that link could allow a hacker to gain access to your system or download malicious files. If you think your computer is infected, do not click on random email links. Instead, look for the right cybersecurity software solution to protect your endpoints. Email spoofing
Why are email phishing scams so successful? Because spam e-mails are very good at impersonating legitimate business information to get you to take action. In an attack, a spammer chooses a company logo that the victim will trust, such as a bank or an employer, and uses the company’s system and logo.
Before replying or clicking anything, check the From line to make sure the sender’s email address (not just the last name) is correct. If in doubt, contact the company to verify if the email is genuine.
Competition winners
Spammers often send emails claiming that you’ve won a contest or prize. They prompt you to respond quickly to claim your prize and may ask you to click a link or submit personal information. If you do not know the contest or if the email address is suspicious, do not click on any links and do not respond with personal information. Financial fraudsters
Unfortunately, spammers feed on people’s goodwill. A common financial panic starts with an email asking for help in difficult situations. A spammer creates a story about needing money for a family emergency or catastrophic life event. Some scams, such as the Nigerian presidential scheme, promise to give you money if you hand over your bank account information or pay a small processing fee. Always be careful when giving out personal information or sending money.
